Optic nerve sheath diameter measurement using bedside ultrasound: Is it accurate?

© 2015 Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Raised intracranial pressure (ICP) is a complication not just of traumatic brain injury and other acute cerebral insults, but also of a number of general medical conditions. Monitoring of ICP is of paramount importance in Neurointensive Care Unit. Increased ICP causes brain insult which may be associated with increased mortality and poor neurological outcomes.[1-3] Bedside clinical diagnosis can be diffi cult as early clinical signs may be misinterpreted, and heavy reliance on cross-sectional imaging studies may further delay diagnosis.

Estimating the accuracy of optic nerve sheath diameter measurement using a pocket-sized, handheld ultrasound on a simulation model
BACKGROUND Ultrasound measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) appears to be a promising, rapid, non-invasive bedside tool for identification of elevated intra-cranial pressure. With improvements in ultrasound technology, machines are becoming smaller; however, it is unclear if these ultra-portable handheld units have the resolution to make these measurements precisely. In this study, ...

متن کاملElevated Intracranial Pressure Diagnosis with Emergency Department Bedside Ocular Ultrasound
Bedside sonographic measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter can aid in the diagnosis of elevated intracranial pressure in the emergency department. This case report describes a 21-year-old female presenting with 4 months of mild headache and 2 weeks of recurrent, transient binocular vision loss. Though limited by patient discomfort, fundoscopic examination suggested the presence of blurred o...
متن کاملOptic Nerve Sheath Ultrasound for the Bedside Diagnosis of Intracranial Hypertension: Pitfalls and Potential
Raised intracranial pressure is a complication not just of traumatic brain injury and other acute cerebral insults, but also of a number of general medical conditions. Bedside diagnosis can be difficult; early clinical signs may be misinterpreted, and reliance on cross-sectional imaging studies may further delay diagnosis. Ultrasound is a readily available imaging modality in most critical care...
متن کاملCoronal Axis Measurement of the Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter.
OBJECTIVES The true optic nerve sheath diameter cutoff value for detecting elevated intracranial pressure is variable. The variability may stem from the technique used to acquire sonographic measurements of the optic nerve sheath diameter as well as sonographic artifacts inherent to the technique. The purpose of this study was to compare the traditional visual axis technique to an infraorbital ...
